CORE SUBJECTS - Music Theatre
 |
Strong emphasis is placed on all the dance techniques required for this branch of the profession. In addition to the dance techniques already covered, students wanting to specialise in this area will find other electives in acting, music and singing available to fulfil all the requirements of modern day musicals.
In recent years tap dancing has experienced something of a renaissance in the professional theatre, as well as a re-evaluation of its role in dance training, in general. Even students preparing specifically for professional ballet careers are likely to find their curriculum augmented by tap and jazz technique classes.
The London Studio Centre has always attached great importance to tap in preparing students for professional careers, not only because they will encounter the form at auditions, but also because this earliest of jazz techniques is uniquely helpful in teaching analysis of phrasing, with its emphasis on rhythm and syncopation. The Studio has evolved its own syllabus for first year students, based on the traditional vocabulary of tap's American origins, with emphasis on the overall dance quality and the intricate demands of its footwork.
Singing is also an essential part of any training for the musical theatre and there are many classes available, covering a wide range of styles and techniques. In addition to fundamental technique classes, there are repertoire, sight reading and performance classes. In the third year, as an integral part of their training, individual students have private coaching given by experienced professionals. |
