Workshops and masterclasses are frequently given by directors, choreographers and musical
directors responsible for major West End productions. This, coupled with public performances mounted
regularly throughout the year, both in-house and at professional venues, offers
the students the opportunity of working with a wide variety of potential employers.
In
addition to the practical work, students on the degree programme pursue a broad range of contextual
studies in dance history, appreciation, anatomy, music, film and television, theatre design and
fashion, notation, choreography and cultural studies. This work leads to a
dissertation of their own choosing in the final stages of their studies.
The students are assessed throughout the year on every aspect of their course.
The credits obtained accumulate throughout the course and contribute towards the student's
final qualification. The course is based on a system of credit accumulation and transfer (C.A.T.S.)
enabling students to transfer from other institutions to the London Studio Centre and to the
development of exchange programmes with other universities.
Students may be prepared for the
following examinations: British Ballet Organization, Cecchetti and Royal Academy of Dancing Major
examinations (including Solo Seal); Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing and Benesh Movement
Notation teaching examinations; Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music or Trinity College of
Music Singing Examinations and Certificates in Stage Fighting.
On graduation, in addition to
their qualifications, students are eligible to become full members of British Actors' Equity,
enabling them to start work in the British theatre and overseas.
