INDIVIDUAL STUDY PROGRAMMES - COURSE OUTLINE

The Theatre Dance Course at the London Studio Centre aims to nurture the potential of every student, meeting their individual needs and aspirations. It combines core and optional subjects in a way that guarantees a comprehensive training in order to provide them with the skills and experience that are required to meet the demands of a professional career. Because of the breadth of training available, a wide range of options enables each student to pursue his or her own interests and expertise.

Leaping Towards a Career in Professional Theatre

"...allows students to fulfill their potential"
YEAR 1

The first year lays a foundation in a number of dance techniques that are essential to students wishing to work in dance and music theatre, incorporating performing experience and repertoire. Other theatre skills such as drama and singing are also introduced at this stage, giving students a thorough grounding in all the techniques that are required to prepare them for a versatile and successful performing career. Students wishing to specialise in classical ballet as a chosen career may pursue a route that replaces core singing and drama classes with classical ballet subjects such as pointe work, repertoire and virtuosity classes. Major syllabi examinations may be studied in addition to the main course as part of the Access Programmes. The Studio is able to cover R.A.D., Cecchetti, B.B.O. and I.S.T.D. dance syllabi; the I.S.T.D. and Cecchetti teaching syllabi; Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music or Trinity College of Music singing examinations and Stage Fighting Certificates.

YEAR 2

The second year builds on the core techniques and introduces a broader range of specialist options, allowing students to create a timetable suitable to their individual requirements. At this stage students discuss their intended careers with both year tutors and the Artistic Directors of the four performing companies. More performance based courses become available and students are encouraged to begin to focus on their potential career paths. Syllabus work is completed during Year 2, and at the end of this year specific productions are staged where students are seen in a broad range of techniques.

YEAR 3

In the third and final year of the course, students select one of four professional options in which to specialise, enabling them to concentrate fully on all the areas relevant to their chosen career. For students specialising in classical ballet, contemporary dance, jazz theatre dance, or music theatre, their training culminates in a performing group, which rehearses and presents a full evening programme on tour, in professional theatres in the UK.
